Let us take a look at some of the common causes of hearing loss and some of the remedies, treatments  and support that can be applied to this widely experienced problem

Causes of Hearing Loss

  • Loss of hearing can be a gradual process over time along with increasing age (presbyacusis)

Many people over the age of 60 are either hard of hearing or deaf and need the help of a  hearing aid

This is a natural decline in hearing over time.

  • Another cause of hearing problems is as a result of being subjected to unusually loud noise which can damage the hair cells in the inner ear that are the main means of converting air waves into the electrical signals that the brain translates as sound.

causes of deafnessSound is made up of waves that are essentially vibrations in the air.

The ear is designed to pick up these vibrations and change them into electrical signals that get sent to the brain.

The brain then interprets the incoming signals into something that makes sense to us and that we can recognize and decipher

We recognise them as musical notes, human voices, a bird singing, a car backfiring, an alarm clock and so on.

  • In addition, deafness or partial deafness can arise due to having a benign or malignant tumor in the ear, otosclerosis or as a result of a stroke or suffering from MS.
  • Hearing loss may also come about as the result of a viral or bacterial infection,  tinnitus or as a side effect of taking certain drugs (ototoxicity) such as quinine for malaria and some antibiotics, although the effect is not always permanent.

Powerful Natural Healing Techniques That Can Actually Reverse Tinnitus!

The Tinnitus Miracle

Sensorineural and Conductive Hearing Loss

Most of these problems arise because of damage caused to the actual structure, hairs or pathways in the ears and are grouped together under the term ’sensorineural hearing loss’ because it has something to do with the ’sensors’ in the ear.

Another set of hearing loss problems are grouped under the term ‘conductive hearing loss’ and relate to anything that blocks the passage of air or sound between the outer and inner ear. Sound is therefore not being conducted or transmitted into the inner ear. Basically anything that completely blocks the ear canal is at the root of the problem.

This might happen, for example, because of a build up of fluid in the middle ear due to an infection of some kind such as otitis where the eustachian tube, which connects the ear with the back of the throat, is unable to open or function as usual, due to  inflammation in the ear and swelling. Along with some deafness there may also be a feeling off dizziness.

Or the ear may be obstructed by a build up of ear wax, otherwise known as cerumen. Other causes include actual physical damage through an accident or injury, severe blow to the ear or having had something poked into the ear or a foreign body stuck in it which has led to a perforated eardrum or blockage. In this case the hearing loss would more likely be sudden because of the appearance of a hole in the ear, rather than the gradual loss experienced in age related conductive deafness.

It is possible to suffer from hearing problems that are made up of a combination of any of these so if you are having problems with your hearing it would be a good idea to go for a doctor’s examination and diagnosis and there are a range of tests and treatments available.

Hearing Loss Treatments

Ear problems due to allergies can be treated with appropriate allergy treatments.

Wax problems can be treated by removing the blockage and a popular treatment for that these days is hopi ear candles

The treatment selected depends on what the cause is.

muffled hearing in one earIf it is a temporary problem which has arisen due to a bacterial infection the most common treatment would be a course of antibiotics and maybe a decongestant.

Treat the infection with a natural antibiotic remedy

Liquid Colloidal Silver

A very popular and highly effective natural antibiotic treatment (which can counter over 650 different types of bacteria versus the 2 or 3 with traditional medicine)

Don’t be tempted to use cotton bud tips because this is much more likely to hinder rather than help the process of wax clearing by pushing the blockage deeper into the ear. It is best to use a drainage technique that allows it to be washed, syringed or ‘melted’ out. In the case of perforations, most can heal on their own over time. If not, along with other structural problems, structural damage may require surgery under local anesthesia and sometimes replacement of certain parts.

Age related hearing loss

Along with a few other conditions age related hearing problems may not be directly treatable but the quality of life can be enhanced by the use of an appropriate hearing aid or by having a cochlear implant.

Generally hearing aids work well with conductive hearing loss and very good results are quite common.

Deafness can cause difficulty communicating and people who are deaf may be at risk of physical and social isolation. Those with deafness or partial hearing are at a greater risk of accidents because they may not hear warning alarms
